The 1990 World Cup in Italy was the first time since 1978 that Sweden had qualified for a championship. Expectations were high for Olle Nordin's national team, but it ended in failure. Some of the players who left their mark in the tournament were Cameroon's 38-year-old striker Roger Milla and Italy's unexpected top scorer Salvatore Schillaci.

The summer of 1994, with the World Cup in the USA, became an enchanted Swedish football summer. Brolin, Dahlin, Ravelli and all the other bronze heroes created football fever throughout the country, and were celebrated at their homecoming by 50,000 people in Rålambshovsparken.

The 1998 World Cup in France was a huge celebration for the home nation. France eventually became world champions for the first time ever after defeating Brazil in the final. Croatia played in its first World Cup tournament and surprisingly took bronze, with the team's star striker Davor Suker becoming the tournament's top scorer.

The 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan was the first World Cup to be played in Asia. Sweden was drawn into what was known as the "Group of Death" along with Argentina, England and Nigeria. Sweden sensationally won the group after, among other things, Anders Svensson's classic free kick goal against Argentina. Brazil eventually won the World Cup gold medal and Ronaldo became the tournament's top scorer.
